Preston North End
12 May 1948
Capped 7 times for Scotland at full international level, John was something of a star for Hibs, a club he would play for a total of 10 years in the 60s and 70' and eventually manage after his playing days were done.
It was rumoured that Newcastle had tried to tempt him south of the border on more than one occasion before finally getting their man at the age of 29.
Having played in the 1974 World Cup it was easy to see why he was so coveted, and even well into his 30s he continued to play after leaving Newcastle, first at Preston, then Hamilton, before returning 'home' to Hibernian for a swan song.
