A powerful centre-half, only a serious injury would stop him from going on to have a far more significant career at Newcastle United that actually transpired to be the case.
Winning 3 and drawing 1 of the five matches he did play he looked to have a bright future ahead of him having won the The Irish Gold Cup with Portadown in the Ireland the year before his transfer to Tyneside.
A fee of £1,325 was not insignificant at the time. But that injury would see him leave to New Brighton on a free transfer the following season.
He would eventually return to Portadown as player manager.
