The early 1900’s were a crazy place in football terms, certainly when compared to the careers of those in the 2000’s. Willie, as he preferred to be called, was one such example. His playing career included Newcastle of course. Indeed the Magpies were the club he played for more than any other, with a modest goal return for an inside forward. His clubs during his playing days included Preston and Chorley after his spell at Newcastle. Next step, manager of Juventus, of course. And then to France where he managed a clutch of clubs. Ball juggling with his head during games. A defence contractor during the war. An importer of wines and spirits into Newcastle after it. What’s not to love about Willie.
