Almost a goal every ten games for a centre half tells you all you need to know about a Kevin Keegan managed Newcastle United, and in particular this ball playing defender. Many of his goals were memorable, none more so than the fifth in the 5-0 demolition of Manchester United at St James Park in 1996. Capped 41 times for Belgium too, he was a perfect example of the beautiful game that manifested itself in that Newcastle side of the time. They called them the ‘Enterainers’, and you only had to watch this guy play with verve, swagger and class to see why. And whilst there would be no silverware to show for that generation and team, the memories will live long for those in black and white.
