Alchurch was dubbed the 'Golden Boy' of Welsh football. Born in Swansea he began and ended his career with his home town, also playing 68 times in all for his country and scoring 23 international goals. In fact it was his record that Ian Rush broke in the 1960's such was his prominence for his national side. His time at Newcastle could, and probably should, have been one to remember. In fact a decline in the form of the team, the ensuing political fall out at the top of the club, and several personal issues off the field led him to eventually leave in1962, Newcastle having been relegated.
