After starting his career at a club in Copenhagen, Preben moved to Scotland to play over 100 games for Greenock Morton. Benny's big move down south to Newcastle United followed, where he played his part in the 1969 Fairs Cup triumph, scoring the crucial goal at 2-0 down in a 3-2 second leg victory. That trophy made him the first Danish player ever to be part of European Trophy winning team. Many years later, he told the Newcastle Chronicle: 'That was the most wonderful moment of my career, it made me a Newcastle fan for life'. He will also be remembered by those around at the time for playing in goal for injured keeper Willie McFaul in a 5-1 win over Manchester United. A subs bench was a very different place in the 70's. In 1971, just before leaving Newcastle for Blackburn, Arentoft was finally re-selected for the Danish International team. He had earned caps during his days in his motherland but until 1971 professional players were not allowed to play for the National team. It seems certain that had he been allowed to play for Denmark during his time at Greenock and Newcastle he would have picked up many more than the 9 Caps he achieved during his career. Preben 'Benny' Arentoft is certainly one name that all Newcastle United fans should commit to memory.
