It's difficult to sum up the time of John Barnes at Newcastle United.

Brought in by his 'chum' Kenny Dalglish, it was clear from the start that his signing, together with that of fellow ex Liverpool player Ian Rush were little more than 'jobs for the boys'. A lack of hunger wasn't an issue, with Barnes clearly overweight from the day he joined. Unfortunately that's where the hunger stopped, with little or no desire to do much else than pick up a pay check during his brief time at the club.

Dalglish bringing in Barnes and Rush was tantamount to Trump giving his wife a job in the White House.

Quite how the Newcastle hierarchy allowed it was mind boggling at the time and remains so to this day.

The once great Barnes, who made his name scoring a worldie against Brazil at just 20, had won all the domestic trophies there was to win at Liverpool. 2 League titles, 2 FA Cups and a League Cup to boot.

A shame then that all the Newcastle fans got to see was the equivalent of their dad trying to keep up with the kids in a 5-a-side tournament.
