Warren Barton holds a special place in the hearts of an entire generation of Newcastle United fans. Signed by Kevin Keegan in the June of 1995 he was catapulted from hot prospect and Wimbledon regular to first choice right back in Newcastle's title chasing 'Entertainers'.
His transfer to the Magpies made him the most expensive defender ever in English football history, but at just over £4m it was a price that Keegan was more than happy to pay to bring in the classy, ball playing, full-back.
His attacking style and composure going forward gave him the versatility that also meant a spell in the middle of the park, but most will remember him as part of full back pair with Beresford on the left.
Whilst the pair may have been stylish on the park, the same could not have always been said for them off it. It seemed they would feed off one another's sometimes unbelievable taste in clothing, with the pair once spotted dressed as what can only be described as 'cowboys' when watching the Reserves play at Gateshead Stadium!! Having witnessed the crime against fashion, it's safe to say that clobber wasn't purchased from Nothumberland Street, that's for sure!
Therein is another positive about the player. To those not party to the inner workings of the club the at the very least, Warren was always the professional. Hardworking and supportive of the club and those around him. Always willing to go the extra mile.
With 3 England Caps and almost 200 games for Newcastle United alone, a shame then, that there would be no silverware for Barton. But for us, a title of a true Entertainer.
