Born in Paris, France, Bernard had two spells at Newcastle United.

In his first spell, under Sir Bobby Robson, he would have his golden spell in football. Playing in the Champions League for Newcastle he was also part of a team that finished 4th, 3rd and 5th in three seasons under the Grandfather of Newcastle managers.

His partnership with fellow Frenchman, Laurent Robert was excellent, driving the club to the Semi-Finals of the UEFA Cup during that same spell.

But when Robson was unceremoniously dropped by Newcastle and replaced by Graeme Souness, his days at the club were numbered, and he was shipped out like many of his fellow teammates.

After spells at Southampton and Rangers, Bernard returned to Newcastle United in 2006 for a fee of £2.6m, having gone back on an agreement at the time with Leeds which wasn't well received.

Struggling with fitness the player lasted less than a year at the club without playing a single game however (hence his signed from / to and fee is not shown on this page), and was forced to retire before going on to own Durham City Football Club after his playing days.
