Born in Yorkshire, Wilf started his career at Doncaster before moving to Huddersfield playing well over 200 times for those two clubs.

Moving to Newcastle United in 1934 and scored a hat-trick on his debut against at home to Bury and in his second home game he scored a brace against Hull City in the FA Cup.

His early promise would not last however and after just 44 games in two years he was off to Queens Park Rangers.
