Born in Sheffield and starting his career with Sheffield United he moved to York City where he played 92 goals 137 league games, an astonishing record. Indeed his record was not limited to the league, scoring the equaliser that forced an FA Cup Semi Final replay against our very own Newcastle United. The Magpies winning the replay and then the 1955 Final.
A mega move to Newcastle United followed for £4,500, where he scored 10 goals in 11 games. For some bizarre reason that wasn't enough for him not to be sold a year later to Chesterfield.
