Playing just once 'official' game for Newcastle United, a 3-0 loss to Blackburn, George's career on the North East was scuppered by the WWII.

He did actually play a handful of games during hostilities, where he served in the RAF, including 20 for Newcastle and sprinkling of other clubs including Arsenal.

On return from the war he joined Millwall for whom he played over 70 games.
