Born in Gateshead, William would have a very decent career at Newcastle United.
Playing a total of 143 games for United, he would win over 40% of the games he played in, conceding less than a goal a game.
With a record like that it's no surprise that he managed at least one major honour, a winners medal in the 1924 FA Cup.
For someone who's professional career was interrupted by the First World War, meaning he would have to wait several years from being snaffled up by Newcastle before he could make his debut, it makes his record all the more impressive.
Newcastle United would be the only professional team that Bill would play for.
His 'goals against' record stands the test to time to this day.
