Starting his career in Chester le Street Boys club he would be signed by Newcastle for their youth squad.

He would make his debut for the Magpies in 1961 where he would be a bit part player for two seasons before leaving for Rotherham United for a nominal sum.

He would play 128 league games for Rotherham and another 100 for Doncaster Rovers helping them to the 4th Division title.

He would retire from football soon after and join the British Transport Police.
