One of the Premier League's all time great strikers, he made his name at Newcastle United.
Having failed to impress as a youth at Arsenal he would first move to Fulham on loan before another loan spell, made permanent soon after at Bristol City would see him impress during the season of 1992/93.
But Newcastle United manager already had 'Andy' in his sights with a potential mouthwatering link up with Peter Beardsley his plan. And what a link up it would prove to be. Cole would score 12 goals in as many games as Keegan's Newcastle would romp to the Division One title and join Englands elite league just a year after its formation in 1993.
Cole would then score 34 goals in 40 league games in his first full season at the club and his first in England's top flight, scoring 41 goals in all competitions, a new club record.
Seemingly untouchable at Newcastle, and a goal scoring machine domestically and in Europe, the unthinkable happened when he was suddenly sold to Manchester United on the 10th January 1995. The sale forced Keegan to famously stand on the steps of St James Park to address an angry crowd asking the fans 'do you trust me?'. A man laying his own reputation on the line for what was to come!
What was to come was Cole's replacement being signed that same summer. A certain Alan Shearer.
Cole would play fifteen times for England scoring just one goal. He would go on to score 93 goals in 195 league appearances including winning the 'treble' (which included an FA Cup win over Newcastle United).
A player not as 'loved' on Tyneside as perhaps he should be. Maybe because of the way he left (a club move more than ever his), or the success that followed that move to Manchester. For those of us who saw him in black and white (or that famous blue away kit), he was quite something however.
