Tommy had a four year spell at Newcastle United, playing 124 league games in the process.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he'd gain just the one full cap for his national side in 1976 whilst at Newcastle in a game against Switzerland.
He was signed by Newcastle from Sheffield Wednesday after they dropped into the second tier of English football and following their failure to be promoted at the first attempt. Wednesday did at least manage to recoup the £100k they spent on him to snatch him from Aberdeen some six years earlier.
He'd leave Newcastle for Villa, with United making a tidy profit on the player although he was moved on quickly from Birmingham as Aston Villa built their squad of the 80's that had such success.
He'd hold a number of coaching positions upon retirement including briefly at Newcastle again.
