A career at Newcastle that would stretch over a decade if you include his time with the youth team and the 9 years as a senior pro was a case of 'what might have been' for George who was more than a proficient left half back on his day.
On the cusp of the England team perhaps, a career ending (essentially) injury sustained against Leeds United in 1964 would see him out of the game for two years and he'd never be the same player again.
He'd make a good fist of it upon his return but would soon be allowed to join Brighton where he would only last another year as a professional footballer. A real shame given his undoubted quality before the injury.
His injury would see him move into a career in physiotherapy however, and a successful one at that. For thirty years he'd ply his trade first at Birmingham and then for twenty years at Coventry. And if you want to see his face, just go and watch Coventry's winning FA Cup performance of 1987, there you'll see him in the dugout as physio. A happy end to a challenging career in football.
