Born in Gateshead, Norman started his career with Newcastle United and stayed with the club for three years playing regularly throughout.

He'd move to Reading and Northampton but fail to make an impact. He'd move into management as player manager at Exeter for two years. He'd manage for further combined five years at Yeovil, Barrow and Oldham.

Both of his brothers also played and managed in the professional game.
