David Ginola is a French born footballer who was part of Kevin Keegan’s Entertainers side that graced the Premier League in the 1990’s but ultimately failed to win any silverware.

His 7 goals in 75 games for Newcastle United tell nothing of his influence over the Magpies side of that time and is still seen by many as the greatest Frenchmen ever to pull on the black and white shirt.

Bought from PSG for a mere £2.5m in 1995, his team would go on to finish second that season behind Manchester United by just 4 points. This was the season that Newcastle United had been 10 points clear in January, so despite being their best league finish for decades, there was a huge sense of disappointment that Newcastle hadn’t seen the season through.

Despite an approach from Sir Bobby Robson at Barcelona, Ginola stayed another season, now linking up with Alan Shearer who arrived for a world record £15m. But that season was ill-fated, and with Keegan walking and Dalglish replacing him. The Frenchman’s days were numbered. Well before his time should have been up he would leave Newcastle for Spurs in 1997 to the dismay of many at the club, having come so close to finally breaking the drought of silverware during his time.

At Spurs he went on to play a pivotal role, winning League Cup in 1999.

Capped 17 times for his country he also had a brief career in acting and politics before recovering from a major heart attack in 2016, falling unconscious during a charity football match the lead to a coma and 6 hours of heart surgery. Thankfully he recovered fully and was ofter seen as a football pundit in the years after his recovery.

In August 2024 he appeared in an Adidas advert, with the German sports manufacturer delivering an advertising masterpiece that culminated in David wearing a homage to the away kit he graced as a player.

A gentlemen, a footballing wizard and a handsome man to boot. What's not to love!
