Grant would only be at Newcastle United for a solitary season having signed from Blackburn in the summer of 2016.
Hanley had been Captain at Blackburn before he left, having played over 180 games for the Lancashire club.
His move to Newcastle was part of the Magpies 'cutting their cloth' strategy and bringing in steady players having just been relegated to the Championship and looking to bounce back at the first attempt. The £5.5m fee was probably worth it however, with immediate promotion even if Grant did only play in a handful of games that season.
United would immediately move Grant out of the club having regained their Premier League status with a £3.5m move to Norwich sealed in 2017.
The player would go on to be a great servant for Norwich, playing over 150 games and the opportunity to play in the Premier League again.
Hanley also played 45 times for his country, scoring twice.
