After signing for Newcastle United in 1904 as a teenager, James would have to wait two years for his competitive debut, a game against Aston Villa. He would get ten more games for the Magpies and in his final appearance, against what is now Sheffield Wednesday, he scored his only goal. A bad knee injury put an end to his career whilst still at Newcastle and he retired from football.
