Capped for Switzerland, Mbabu was one of the nearly men at Newcastle United. He failed to make any impact in the first team, only ever playing five games at senior level. Blessed with pace and some decent skill there was always a question whether the player would bloom somewhere he could be given regular first team football. After seeing out his 3 and a half year contract at Newcastle he moved to Young Boys in Switzerland. In his second season there he played a big part in the club winning their first League title for 32 years. He was eligible to place for DR Congo, France or Switzerland, but chose to play fro the latter, his place of birth.
