Imagine a player who, in your lifetime, had won the FA Cup with Newcastle United three times, had stayed at the club for 12 years and made over 400 appearances. We'd be talking legend status.

Well let me introduce you to Bobby Mitchell, who did just that.

Having started his career with Third Lanark, a club based in his home city of Glasgow (a club dissolved in 1967), where he played 70 league games.

He moved to Newcastle United in 1949 aged 24.

His cult status at St James Park would earn him the nickname "Bobby Dazzler" on the terraces and beyond.

And in a Newcastle United team that dominated domestic cup competitions in the '50s, Bobby would play a key role in each. His most notable contribution being his scoring of the second and ultimately winning goal against Manchester City in 1955. Newcastle had taken the lead in the after just 45 seconds through Milburn (a record that would stand until 1997), but had been pegged back just before half time with a goal from Bobby Johnstone for City. However Mitchell would score United's second on 52 minutes and Hannah would wrap things up for the Magpies 7 minutes later.

Less well known is Mitchell's other impact on the final however, with City having to play for 73 minutes with only 10 men. And not for the reason you might think (a red card), but because in those days there were no substitutes. City player Jimmy Meadows had tried to take down Bobby on 17 minutes only to come off worst in the challenge and would be stretchered off. Indeed a tackle that would end his career.

Mitchell played twice for Scotland. Scoring once against Denmark in 1951.

A true United hero, Bobby died in April 1993.
