He of the Roeder shuffle. Glenn both played for and managed Newcastle United in an association that spanned two spells between 1983, after joining from QPR, and 2007 after a two year spell as Newcastle manager. As a defender he was something of a rare breed, playing with his head up and with a little class and style. He represented the club over 200 times and was something of a fans favourite, especially when he deployed the 'shuffle'. As a manager he also enjoyed relative success, winning the Intertoto Cup, a minor trophy that allowed Newcastle United access to the UEFA Cup. He was put in post after Graeme Souness had been sacked, although Newcastle had to lobby hard to get FIFA and the Premier League to allow his to manage the club as Glenn had not finished his Pro Licence, partly on account of a brain tumour. He was allowed to stay in the job and remained in post until he was replaced by Sam Allardyce on 15 May 2007.
