Matt signed for Newcastle United on loan in the Winter window of 2022. That window saw Newcastle United spend £90m, the most of any club in the world, with incomings including Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes for a club record fee.

At one point in the window, the first under the new Saudi ownership, the Magpies had been linked with Luca Digne, the French International. Instead Luca chose to move to the more established Aston Villa meaning Matt was displaced from the first team.

Having been the Villains player of the season in 2020/21 it seemed a logical move for all parties, with a straight loan for the remainder of the 2021/22 season.

Matt had a great second half of the season, good enough in fact for Newcastle to make his deal permanent in the following summer (2022) for a fee of £15m.
