The signing of Sando Tonali represented a huge coup for Newcastle United who signed the 23 year old from AC Milan in the summer of 2023.

The significance of signing a player, a boyhood AC Milan fan, who's dad was as Ultra at the Italian club was not lost on anyone. AC Milan had made the semi final of the Champions League the season before and Sandro was regarded by most at the club at part of the future and the soul of the team.

However the fee at £55m would prove too much for the Milan club to turn down and would (should the add on criteria be met) be the largest fee ever paid for an Italian player in football history at the time.
