Jetro Willems joined Newcastle United from Frankfurt on a season long loan in 2019 with a view to a permanent transfer.
An ever-present in the starting line up for 19 league games form the start of the 19/20 season his season and time at Newcastle United was cruelly ended by a horrific ligament injury in the January of 2020.
Up to that point he had already established himself as a firm favourite with the Newcastle faithful. Whilst he was prone to the odd error his forward thinking and dynamic style coupled with quite a bit of class on the ball made him easy on the eye and we're sure enjoyable to play with.
Willems scored a lovely opening goal against Liverpool away (then the reigning European Champions) in what would ultimately be a 3-1 defeat. His other goal against League Champions Manchester City in a 2-2 draw.
He would also be the player to lay on Matty Longstaff's first goal. A winner against Manchester United in front of the Gallowgate.
Capped 22 times for the Dutch at the time of leaving United, he will be fondly remembered by most in black and white for his efforts in an unfortunately brief spell with the club.
