Carl started his career at Newcastle United. But after only making one appearance in his two year stay with Newcastle he dropped down the divisions to play at Gateshead. He reemerged however making a handful of appearances for Doncaster and Millwall before moving on to brief spells with Rotterdam and with German side Schwarz-Weiß Essen. In total he made just shy of 60 appearances for all his clubs netting 16 goals.
