AS Monaco left back Antonio Barreca has completed a move to Newcastle United on loan.
The deal will cost the Magpies £1m for the remainder of the season and includes an option to buy for around £9m upon completion of the loan spell.
Antonio, an Italy U21 International, will bring much needed competition on the left. The continued unreliability of Paul Dummett through injury has exposed Matt Ritchie to an almost relentless slog on that flank in recent weeks.
Whilst his preferred position is Left Back, he is also comfortable playing as a Wing Back or even in midfield. Antonio has been starved of starting births this season even through Monaco did spend £9m on the player last summer. He started 7 of the first 11 league games this season but has predominantly failed to get even into the squad in the league since. A long term deal could therefore suit both teams. Monaco getting the money they paid to Torino, Newcastle getting a bright prospect that Rafa will no doubt hope to turn into the real deal.
