Who is: BAS DOST
Dost, a fellow countrymen of Krul, Janmaat, Anita and DeJong, is reportedly available for between £10-15m from his current club VfL Wolfsburg.
Dost enjoyed an excellent season in 14/15 scoring 16 goals in 21 Bundesliga games and 20 goals in 36 games in all competitions. His league form in particular was impressive and included a run of 12 goals in 7 games mid season helping his side to an impressive 2nd place finish. This season he has already scored 9 of his teams 26 goals (from 24 games) with Wolfsburg currently 7th and not quite hitting the heights of last season yet.
The 6ft 5in striker is primarily a 'poacher' when it comes to his style of play and will certainly need some ammunition from the flanks if he were to join Newcastle, which should be a concern given our current lack of quality from the flanks. Don't let his height fool you either, he's more of a Peter Crouch than a Duncan Ferguson. The lad does have some tekkers as can be seen with this strike against Bayern....'good feet for a big man' as they say....
Born in '89, making him 26 now, he's probably at the upper limit of what we all assume is our transfer policy age limit and has 18 months left on his current deal.
OUR VERDICT: We're not sure this is the player Newcastle need right now. Think Luuk de Jong is what we say. He may do very well in a team that is playing free flowing, attacking football, creating plenty of chances, but hey, wouldn't we all. Whilst the German league is obviously a tougher place than some other European leagues we just think there are better options for the money we'd need to spend on this player. Austin for one!
