Round three of the Checkatrade Trophy threw up the last 16 draw that everyone would have wanted to see as the ‘balls dropped’.

Newcastle United’s under 21 team will travel to the Stadium of Whatever for a clash against Sunderland’s first team. And whilst the ribbing has already started on twitter given this will be the first ever competitive meeting of a senior and junior side of these two great rivals, things are bound to get tense before the actual meeting in the week commencing 7January.

Newcastle are only one of three U21 sides that are left if this years competition (along with Chelsea and Manchester City), whilst Sunderland remain amongst the overall favourites for the competition.

It will now be interesting to see what kind of away allocation the Magpies are given for the tie, whilst it certainly seems that there is every possibility this game will provide the competitions highest every attendance - we shall see.
