Huddersfield 0-1 Newcastle United
It’s more than 6 years since Newcastle United had managed to stay undefeated in 4 consecutive away games in the top flight. Breaking that record against fellow Premier League strugglers Huddersfield could not have come at a better time then as the Magpies climbed back to 14th in the table.
Following on from draws against Everton and Southampton and taking all three points from Burnley, this was another hard fought tussle that ultimately proved very fruitful, with Rondon scoring once again - the only goal of the game.
Huddersfield dominated the game in terms of possession, although did little to trouble Dubravka other than fleetingly. And when they did managed to break through that defence, the Newcastle stopper, one who has quick become a fans favourite, was equal to everything they could throw at them.
Rafa went with three centre halves again for this one, something that has served him well several times this season.
STARTING XI: Dubravka, Schar, Lascelles, Clark, Manquillo, Diame, Ki (Hayden, 72), Atsu, Kenedy (Dummett, 89), Perez, Rondon (Ritchie, 81)
The tactic was clear. Soak up whatever Huddersfield could muster and hit them on the break.
The plan worked a treat. Despite 75% of possession there was no way through for the home side. Newcastle on the other hand could and should have had more than the one goal they did get. A perfectly good goal from Perez ruled out for offside.
The one ‘good’ goal was decent. A ball releasing Perez up the right flank was turned well into the path of the onrushing Manquillo who’s centre was slotted home with a first time finish by Rondon.
The travelling Newcastle fans have indeed not have it quite as good for a while. And if the Magpies could only find the same kind of consistency at home there would be cause for optimism and a glance up the table. Fulham at home next, so let’s see!
