BREAKING: Newcastle smash transfer record to sign Joelinton

Newcastle United have smashed their transfer record fee to secure the services of Hoffenheim striker Joelinton. The free is said to be in the region of £30m, to be paid in instalments, and may rise above £40m depending on the clubs achievements.

Joelinton Cassio Apolinário de Lira was born in Alianca, Brazil. He only made 12 senior appearances for Sport Recife in his homeland before being snapped up German club Hoffenheim. A reasonably successful loan spell at Rapid Vienna followed before returning to his parent club.

Those who have played with him highlight his physical presence and eye for goal, with many suggesting he will play for Brazil national team in the future. If that were to be the case, now at just 22, we may not see this lad in black and white for too long. In the nicest possible way, let’s hope that he’s so successful that this becomes a problem!

Newcastle fans will hope he has something like the impact his fellow Brazilian, Firmino, has had at Liverpool. Someone he has been likened to in the past.

His goal scoring record is not spectacular, but the player does have a real presence and plenty of talent. Steve Bruce will be hoping that he, Almiron and whatever else he can find to bolster his attack will be enough to frighten a few Premier League defences this season.

The signing will come a something of a relief that at least someone is incoming during the window, with Joselu, Perez and Rondon all having departed before a ball is kicked.

This signing alone won’t be enough of course, with Gayle and Sorenson the only other recognised options up top.

In typical Newcastle United style, of late, the transfer seems to have taken an age. Another case of ‘getting it over the line’ his previous club manager seemed to be certain this was happening, in public, since the middle of last week. Yet here we are a week later, only just managing to get pen to paper. This continued slow pace of transfer does not bode well for the remaining 16 days of the window, does it?!

Originally talked about last Christmas, it is thought that Rafa didn’t fancy the player, but with a change in Head Coach the move has now been completed.
