Last minute shopping...

Deadline day did finally see Newcastle United spend a little cash. The signing of Federico Fernández provided Rafa with some much needed cover at centre back, what with the injury to Lejeune which will keep him out for most, if not all, of the season.

Fernandez arrives from Swansea, just like teammate Ki did earlier in the window. Let’s hope the omen of continually buying from relegated clubs does not catch up with nufc any time soon.

At 29 this is definitely a deviation from policy. One that would suggest all other options were exhausted and it really was a case of just do something or Rafa might just walk!

A loan deal for a young Brazilian Barca centre half, Santos, had been scuppered as he wasn’t going to be granted a work permit, seemingly leaving Newcastle with no choice.

Swansea had been holding out for £10 for the Argentinian, but with needs must to get him off the wage bill a deal was eventually struck for around £6m.

Fernandez joins on a two year deal. Captain at Swansea, he played 34 times for them last season in all competitions and is known to Rafa from his time at Napoli.

Welcome to the ‘good ship’ Newcastle Federico. Enjoy the ride!
