Taxi for Carr
Graham Carr has left Newcastle United by mutual consent.
In a club statement, Managing Director Lee Charnley confirmed on the nufc.co.uk website:
“It has been my pleasure to work with Graham over the last seven years as both a colleague and a friend. He can count some of Newcastle’s most successful players in recent years as his ‘finds’.
“Everyone connected with Newcastle United wishes Graham the very best for the future.”
Graham Carr, once seen as almost untouchable at the club with the signings of the likes of Cabaye, Cisse and of course Tiote will leaves after 7 years.
Now in his 70s Carr had been handed an 8 year contract in 2012 by then Managing Director Derek Lambias. The deal caused much interest in the media and with fans but at the time, whilst the length of a contract was questionable, securing him on a long term basis seemed a smart move.
But in recent times the failed transfers of so many French players, Carr’s regular stomping ground, has left many questioning if it was time to move on. Cabella, Riviere, Saivet, Thauvin to name a few.
And with the new world order, that of Rafa Benitez, it seemed inevitable that the relationship with Carr would be a strained one. Knowing the control that Benitez likes to exert on his clubs it was perhaps only a matter of time.
Nevertheless, today’s announcement marks a sea change in so much that has been true of Newcastle United for so long.
