Sels sells...
Newcastle United’s third cash sale of the window sees Matz Sels leave in a £4m move to French side Strasbourg.
His leaving this window is no surprise and Newcastle have done well to recoup most of the £6m they paid for him back in 2016.
Sels never really managed to establish himself at Newcastle, making 14 appearances in all, only 9 in the league. All of those in the Championship, with 7 conceded and 4 clean sheets to boast in those few league games.
His debut for the Magpies came against Fulham, but after a mistake at Villa a few games later he was replaced by Darlow as Rafa’s number one between the sticks.
A reasonably successful loan spell at Anderlecht followed, despite a shaky start, where he played 37 times including three in the Champions League. But after the Belgian side couldn’t agree a fee for the keeper in close season it became a case of whomever was the highest bidder. So Strasbourg it is!
